Celebrity Summer Weddings 2012

You know those gossip magazines that have the "celebrities are just like us" sections?  There are photos of celebrities taking out their trash, buying groceries or taking their kids to the park... in $4,000 dresses and multi-million dollar cars. Yes, celebrities do "normal people" things but they always do everything in a big way.  So when celebrities get married, the celebrations are that much more amazing.  Here are a few of the summer weddings so far including some from this past weekend. Julie Benz went all out on her May 5th wedding, celebrating with a " Cinco de Mayo" theme to honor her new husband's Mexican heritage.  So many great details but I think the Patrón bottle favors are my favorite!

On May 19th, famously laid back Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg tied the knot with his long time love in their backyard. The newlyweds made headlines for being so low key- in fact guests thought they were showing up to celebrate the bride's graduation from medical school!

Guest Post: Erica Cote of Silver Immersion

So now you're engaged... the bridal world is at its knees to cater to you!  But how do you figure out what kind of catering you're looking for??  Your beauty persona is deeply rooted in the kind of event you are looking to have.  Black tie?  Shabby chic?  Classic elegance?  High-end couture?  Once you have an idea, then you can begin to discern the persona that you want for your big day!  Here are the basic questions every bride should ask yourself a few questions to get the ball rolling.

1. Do I like makeup on a regular basis? If not, would I mind it for one day?(can my skin take one for the team)

2. Do I like simple, natural looks? Or do I prefer to be an automatic show stopper at all times? (some prefer Natalie Portman over Scarlett Johansson)

3. Do I like beauty from a particular era? 50's, 60's, 70's?

4. Do I tend to gravitate to looks that give a feel of certain icons? Marilyn Monroe(black eyeliner and red lips), Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren(ooh lala), Diana Ross(flash those lashes girl!), Betty Paige(we get quite a few ladies that like the pinup feel), Grace Kelly, Dorothy Dandridge....I could name tons but at least this gives you somewhere to start!

5. What facial feature do I want to play up? Eyes, lips, cheekbones(never underestimate the beauty of awesome bone structure). From there you can begin to find some inspiration with your ideas to guide you(Gwen Stefani's timeless red lip look might not be what you're looking for if you're more into the bare naked beauty of JLo).

6. Do I like hair that is up and structured or loose and free flowing? You definitely want to go with a feel that flows well with your choices for hair and makeup. Continuity(even if it is unorthodox) is the glue to hold it all together.

So obviously I could go on and on about this, but I think you get the idea.  Hair and makeup is meant to be about accentuating who you already are.  Some choose to let their alter ego shine, while others are content just polishing up the beauty that shines through every day.  Begin to figure out how to be the best glammed up version of yourself on your big day... and don't forget to have fun!!!!

Celebrity Weddings: Gwen + Gavin + That Amazing Dress

All celebrity weddings make a statement and most say "hey I'm incredibly rich and this is what I dreamed up for my wedding".  Then there are the extremely memorable weddings that us mere mortals will remember forever.  For me, one such wedding is that of Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale.  And let's be honest, if you remember this wedding then you most likely are remembering that dress.  That breathtaking and quite daring Christian Dior gown that singlehandedly made color in wedding dresses chic AND brought major attention to the 'ombre' trend in fashion.  It is so iconic that in March 2011 that gown found a new home at the Victoria and Albert Design Museum in London. 

Now back to wedding details.  "After six years together, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were more than ready to get married – even if the bride was an hour late to the ceremony. The couple exchanged vows on September 14, 2002 during a traditional Anglican service at St. Paul’s Covent Garden in London. Stefani carried a delicate bouquet of phalaenopsis orchids and her grandmother’s Catholic prayer book down the aisle.  A second wedding was held in Los Angeles two weeks later. According to Stefani, it was held so that she could wear a custom-designed wedding dress by British-Gibraltarian fashion designer John Galliano twice. The fashion-forward singer, who has since also become a best selling designer, wore a bright lipstick that echoed the hot-pink hue detailing the bottom of her hand-painted gown (Source)."  "The groom wore a traditional British morning suit and was escorted by his Hungarian sheepdog, Winston, who donned a garland of red flowers.  Following the vows, guests boarded double-decker buses and headed to Home House, a private club, where a six-course Italian dinner was served in the courtyard garden. The menu included risotto, pasta and seafood.  To celebrate their first anniversary, Rossdale and Stefani returned to St. Paul’s Covent Garden with the same car and driver they had on their wedding day (Source)."  Now for the photos!

Celebrity Weddings: The Iconic One

Even if this wedding is before your time (like me), the images of the late Princess Diana's wedding to Prince Charles are now iconic.  Although many royals have wed over the years, the wedding of Lady Diana Frances Spencer to Charles, Prince of Wales, is known as the "wedding of the century".  The wedding took place on July 29, 1981, at St. Paul's Cathedral In London, England.  Many people may not know the engagement details: "Diana was 20 years old, Charles 32 years old. Diana and Charles had been seeing each other for about six months when he proposed on February 3, 1981 at a dinner for two at Buckingham Palace."(Source)

Just looking at the pictures it is clear that no expense was sparred for each detail small to large.  From her dress with a 25 foot train to the magnificent headpiece that she wore, everything was extravagant.  I was interested to find out some little known details while researching this wedding and I hope you find them as interesting as I did.  There are no pictures from the reception due to the intense privacy of the event but I did find a bunch of ceremony and official portraits.  Enjoy!

• David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the designers of the wedding dress helped Diana to get dressed on her wedding day.  It cost £9,000 (Source)
• Unfortunately the dress designers had not made allowances for the lack of space in the glass coach that should bring Diana and her father to St. Paul's Cathedral. When the bride alighted from the coach the dress was crumpled and full of creases, not that any of the thousands of spectators minded (Source)
• When saying her vows, Diana changed the order of Charles' forenames, calling him Phillip Charles Arthur George which led Prince Charles to the joke: "Diana, you have actually married my father" (Source)
• After Charles finished the vows he forgot to kiss Diana (Source)
• Numbers: 3,500 people in the congregation at St. Paul's Cathedral, 750 million people watched the ceremony worldwide, yet a billion is the official number when the radio audience is added in. Two million spectators lined the route of Diana's procession from Clarence House, with 4,000 police and 2,200 military officers to manage the crowds (Source)
• After the ceremony, the couple went to Buckingham palace for a small dinner for 120 (Source)
• Diana was the first British citizen to marry an heir to the British throne in 300 years (Source)

Royal Budgeting

Tradition stands that the bride's family pays for the wedding.  Yet, a lot of modern couples are taking on the majority if not the total cost of the wedding.  Money is always a sensitive subject, especially when it is tied to such an emotion-filled and long awaited day such as a wedding.  More than any other etiquette or planning question, budgeting is always at the top of the list.  If the bride's parents pay does that mean that they have a lot of input into the planning?  What if they bride's family is unable to pay for the majority of the wedding, who should take over financial responsibility?  Do the groom's parents get to invite a large amount of people if they are not contributing financially?  What if they ARE contributing financially?  Its all enough to give you a headache and want to elope!

Now, imagine how overwhelming this budgeting must be if you are the newly engaged Prince William & Kate Middleton.  I am SO excited to witness a royal wedding and have been keeping up with all the news coverage.  It was announced today that the wedding date is set for April 29, 2011 and they will wed at historic Westminster Abbey in London.  More coverage has revealed that early estimates of the cost is expected to be close to $40 million not including the $20 million that the taxpayers will be paying for security.  All of the excitement around this royal wedding has certainly created larger than life expectations and the bottom line is that someone will be financially responsible for the wedding of the decade.  But who?  Are Kate's parents expected to foot the bill that no doubt will cover guests that are being invited solely because of proximity to the royal family?  Should the royal family pay for the wedding simply because they have the funds to cover such an extravagant affair?  I'm staying tuned to see how all of the planning unfolds (the dress! the decor!) and especially checking on the budgeting.

Celebrity Weddings: Hide or Seek?

For those of you who are not as wrapped up in all things celebrity gossip as I am, there have been quite a few weddings this year already for the rich & famous.  I wrote about the iconic wedding of Jessica Simpson & Nick Lachey and it is definitely true that celebrity weddings give inspiration to many a bride-to-be, whether celebrities are following or creating trends.  2010 was no different.  Which was your favorite wedding to read about?  There was quite a variety; from the large fan-fare surrounding American "royalty" Chelsea Clinton to the notoriously private Penelope Cruz.  Just like 'regular' brides, some celebrity brides had months of elaborate planning and some planned quickly for a baby on the way.  Some celebs choose to have their weddings covered exclusively by a magazine and some celebrities were able to keep the news secret/ out of the press for few months!

Whatever the style, all couples deserve a wonderful day with their friends & family.  It does make me wonder if I would trade my privacy (and sanity in keeping all my planning secrets/details to myself) for a ginormous celebrity wedding budget.  Sean Penn & Madonna's 1985 wedding was famously covered by paparazzi circling in helicopters.  And that was before the paparazzi became the animals the are today.  So, would you want a lavish & publicly documented wedding or rather sneak away to celebrate with the people that really matter?  And in the same vein, do you like when celebrities share their wedding with the world or keep their big day locked up tight?  Here are some of the weddings that have graced 2010.  Enjoy!

Celebrity Weddings: The One Everyone Remembers

October 26, 2002 is a date you don't remember.  But if you are of my generation (born in the late 70's to early 80's) and you are female, you certainly remember the iconic images of Jessica Simpson's wedding.  I was in college at the time and already an avid collector of bridal magazines.  I actually kept the tear out pages of my collection from high school and college until last year when I realized that these images are online now... and that the pages smelled.  Of the dozens of pages I had kept over the years, I really didn't want to throw these pictures away.  I feel like I have some emotional attachment to these pictures because I can remember so clearly looking at their wedding album in InStyle Weddings issue and knowing without a doubt that I wanted to be a wedding planner.  I wanted to create an amazing day like theirs for other people.

I've seen plenty of celebrity wedding photos over the years and yet the nuptials of Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey will always be on the top of my list.  Which is kind of weird considering that I was never a true fan of Jessica Simpson, her music or her personal life.  And while it was a gorgeous wedding, these are not the colors, theme, dress, or details I imagine for my wedding.  But, I think like many girls my age who saw the same images I did 8 years ago, I was captivated by the glowy perfection and true love radiating from Jess & Nick's big day.   Its like this wedding was the embodiment of what every girl imagined for herself- perfection.  So, while I love your wedding album Jess & Nick, this truly is a case of "its not you, its me".  Enjoy!
